That's why the books were hand picked and rearranged a bit in order to present a narrative that would bring the greatest power to the church. Do you really believe nobody translated a Bible before the 17th century? Or that nobody in Europe could read it in other languages? A great many noblemen were expected to read Greek and Latin classics written in their original tongues. By the Renaissance period anyone who wasn't fluent in Latin would have been considered little better than an illiterate peasant. And becoming a scribe or something similar (often working for the church) was a potential chance for the low born to gain some kind of upward mobility. There were fucking MILLIONS of dudes who spent their days translating old texts into illuminated manuscripts.
